JOB SUMMARY

Performs as a member of the Operating Room team in all technical capacities of assisting with surgical cases. Assists Registered Nurse circulator, and acts as a resource person for the instrument aid and Operating Room service orderlies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.

  • Prepares the operating room for assigned surgical procedure.
  • Intraoperatively assists the operating room team, according to policy.
  • Provides patient safety at all times.
  • Preserves all specimens according to policy.
  • Assists with post-procedure routine and reprocessing of instrumentation.
  • Assists in the orientation of new personnel.
  • Takes "on-call" rotation as assigned with a registered nurse.
  • Ensures the proper handling and care of surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  • Assists specialty registered nurse in the organization and reordering of supplies, as assigned by Nurse Manager.
  • Attends in-services, maintains skills and seeks to increase knowledge base. Attends staff meetings.

Other Functions

  • Assists the central supply technicians as directed by the Nurse Manger.
  • Assists in cleaning/restocking of the Operating Room suites as directed by the Nurse Manager.

PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Patients vary in age from pediatric to geriatrics with a responsibility to meet the needs of the pediatric to geriatric patient(s).

QUALIFICATION/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of Operating Room Technicians course with a Certification or Operating Room Technician certification through the examination.

  • Experience/Skills
  • One year of Operating Room experience preferred.
  • Alertness, good communication skills, technical skill with surgical procedures, able to perform as a team member, learns quickly, follow directions, and good organizational skills.
  • Accuracy in all procedural aspects.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

  • Operating Room Technician Certification required
  • Current CPR certification with the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS

  • Frequent contact with patients, visitors, employers, physicians, nurses and ancillary staff members

ENVIRONMENT

  • Primary body position: Sitting = 85%, Standing/Walking = 15%
  • Lifting requirements up to 15-20 lbs occasionally or frequently
  • Retracting/holding instrumentation for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to loud noises of equipment
  • Potential exposure to airborne diseases: 100% of the time
  • Potential risk of blood borne exposure: 100% of the time
  • Some travel outside the hospital is involved using own transportation: 0%
