Under general supervision, performs professional library functions involved in assisting library patrons with their informational needs; plan and implement library programs; participate in the development of the library collection; and provide assistance, education and information to the public regarding library use and services.
Essential Job Duties:
The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
Answer reference questions and reader's advisory questions; assists or instructs in the use of the library resources.
Evaluate and select library materials; recommend and purchase materials for collection development; remove obsolete, non-relevant and worn books from library collection.
Interpret and communicate library policies and programs to staff, patrons and community groups.
Assist in the development and implementation of programs and services.
Participate in the administration of a variety of library programs including volunteer and summer youth; develop and coordinate assigned library programs.
Recommend additions to collection and services appropriate to the needs of the community.
Work with automated systems; perform searches of databases.
Conduct school class visits and other community outreach programs.
Assist with budget recommendations for collection development.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
Library policies, procedures and functions.
Office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
Principles of professional and technical library work including methods, practices and techniques of library cataloging and referencing.
Computerized cataloging, bibliographical, acquisition and circulation system databases.
Skill and Ability to:
Operate computerized cataloging, bibliographical, acquisition and circulation data systems.
Assist library patrons in response to reference and directional library questions.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Training and Experience:
A Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in library science is required. Two years of increasingly professional and technical library experience is highly desirable.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print.
Requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.
Requires mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
Requires the ability to stand for long periods.
Library environment; work closely with the public; work with computer and office equipment.
May be required to use personal vehicle in the course of employment.
May be required to attend periodic evening meetings and/or to travel within and out of City boundaries to attend meetings.
May be required to work evenings or weekends.
Requires the ability to lift, push, and/or pull items which do not exceed 25 pounds.
