Uber's Hiring Fell 54% Before It Announced a Single Job Cut
Uber announced 3,300 job cuts on September 2nd, roughly 10% of its global workforce. Its hiring had been contracting since early April.
LinkUp data shows Uber's active US job listings peaking near 1,730 in the first week of April, then declining for ten straight weeks. By mid-June they were down to roughly 1,150. They sit near 790 today, about 54% below their peak.
None of the decline was public. Uber disclosed no headcount guidance, filed no WARN notices, and issued no statement. The contraction was visible only in what the company was posting, and it began five months before this morning's announcement.
That is the value of hiring intent as a measure. A company stops advertising jobs well before it eliminates them, because the decision to stop growing comes first and the decision to cut follows.
CEO Dara Khosrowshahi framed the restructuring as removing management layers rather than retrenching, with savings reinvested in autonomous vehicles and delivery. Uber's postings have partially rebuilt since a mid-July low; we’ll keep you posted on what roles are dominating the demand.
